High level DRC government official visits the CongoFlux site

(04-02-2022) Isofys-Cavelab welcomes the first visit of a DRC minister to the CongoFlux site.

On the 19th of January 2022, a team of Isofys-cavelab, led by Prof. Pascal Boeckx and Thomas Sibret, was invited by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Environment of DRCongo, Her excellence Mme. Eve Bazaiba, to organise an official visit of the CongoFlux research site. This site, which is co-operated by our research group, hosts the first EC flux tower of the Congo Basin. A structure which allows the quantification of greenhouse gas exchanges, such as CO2, between the atmosphere and the ecosystem.

Her Excellence, who advocates that the DRC is part of the solution for climate change, demonstrated her support for this project by climbing the tower up to 37 meters above the forest floor. She understands that verifying this potential of the Congo Basin forests requires scientific data, such as that collected on the CongoFlux site. This data will provide the necessary evidence to sensitize global opinion and bring into place effective policies that recognize the importance of this vast tropical area.
